Pho Dalat held true to the quintessential Utilitarian Restaurant Decor 101 pho shop model. Even a turd floating in the toilet greeted me.

Alliteration may be the reason behind the name Grain & Gristle because any restaurant named forebodes bad food. Quite the opposite however, G&G reinforces the widely held belief Portland is a sandwich city.

Despite all the gallons of consumption, the uncontrollable urge to slurp pho at different establishments remains a curse like the salmon run. Fortunately grizzlies are unable to plot where to await my arrival. My run up the river was to Pho An Sandy in a stretch of Sandy Blvd unofficially Little Saigon. Pho An Sandy is housed in top heavy chimneyed building appearing to be an architectural experiment short of funds.

Whole Roasted Trout, charred leeks, and spring salad could be classified quintessential Ned Ludd. The trout had nice crispy skin where it hadn't softened from contact with the salad dressing. The trout had minimal seasoning. The bones had been removed so the whole fish could be and was consumed whole minus the collar. I could have done without the stuffed leeks. The salad dressing's tartness dominated the salad and fish and detracted rather than enhance the trout. Execution didn't justify a $21 price tag. 3 stars.
