This was an unplanned stop but something about the store front said I had to go in. In the short time I was here, many customers came in for whole suckling pigs leading to thinking I should opt for it.

Moo Frites has the reputation around town as serving the best fries or second best, depending on who you listen to. Moo does only one thing and that's fries and variation on the theme.

North-East Chinese Restaurant - Toronto, ON

CLOSED April 30(?), 2020

476 Dundas Street West

Visited December 25, 2010

It’s common knowledge the better Chinese restaurants are located north in Markham and Richmond Hill. But we weren’t there, it was getting late, and surely there had to be some gems in the Toronto. The Chinese restaurant scene changes here so frequently it’s hard to keep up. So after checking out 3 blocks worth of restaurants, the partner decided on this place. There is no queue but it is full.

Kaboom Chicken - Toronto, ON

CLOSED May 24, 2019.  Click here to read the story

722 Queen St E

Kaboom appears to be a family run restaurant specializing in Korean Fried Chicken and they do it extremely well with scrupulous care. They beat KFC and Popeyes in every aspect except for volume and price.

Ali Baba's - Toronto, ON

CLOSED early (?) 2019.  The building has been razed.

229 Church St

It's a Middle East fast food chain and I wish Middle East fast food are more ubiquitous. This is not gourmet but it's different and good enough to visit frequently as a change of pace from Western fast food.

Caplansky's Delicatessen - Toronto, ON

CLOSED June 6, 2016

https://globalnews.ca/news/2746823/caplanskys-deli-suddenly-shut-by-landlord-owner-not-sure-why/

356 College St

Smoked Meat Sandwich. Tender but not fall apart, mildly smoky, fatty but leaner than pastrami, flavorful but not as flavorful as pastrami, a little spongy snap unlike pastrami. The bread was close to oven fresh. Yellow mustard is a mandatory condiment. It was generously portioned but pricey for what it was. Overall a decent package but the sandwich left me deflated. Nothing about it made my want another in the future.  3.25 stars.

928 Dundas St W, Little Italy

The Black Hoof offers abundant nontypical fare. Horse tartare, tongue on brioche, bone marrow, etc. All slightly daring. But the prominent word on the restaurant sealed the fate. Charcuterie it is.

Ka Ka Lucky Seafood BBQ Restaurant – Toronto, ON

CLOSED  mid(?) 2016.  The restaurant sustained a fire, shut down, renovated, reopened, and rebranded as Wok & Roast.

349 Broadview Ave

In the harsh Toronto East Chinatown restaurant scene where restaurants change hands like people change underwear, Ka Ka Lucky has withstood the onslaught of the economy.  I believe it is the oldest longest surviving Chinese restaurant in this Chinatown, and if it isn't, it is near the top of the list.

Smoke's Poutinerie - Toronto, ON

CLOSED March 30(?), 2020

578 Queen Street West

Visited March 30, 2014

Smoke's spread throughout the GTA is the primary competitor to the House of Poutini.  This one is empty when we walk in early afternoon and no others showed up in our time here. Right or wrong, I take it as an omen of mediocrity or worse to come.  The most popular Toronto restaurants have customer presence and queues even during nonprime eating times.

金爵园 Kom Jug Yuen Restaurant – Toronto, ON

CLOSED late (?) 2016

371 Spadina Ave

Kom Jug Yuen located in Old Chinatown claims to have the best BBQ Pork (Char Siu) in North America.  The restaurant hangs a plaque presented by the mayor agreeing.  So is it the best?

Banh Mi & Chi Cali - Toronto, ON

Gold Diamond Chinese Restaurant - Toronto, ON

CLOSED 2013(?)

346-348 Spadina Ave 2nd & 3rd Floor

It was well past lunch hour when we stopped in. There were no dim sum carts but a checklist and the items started arriving shortly after we completed our checklist.
