Fortune Gourmet Kitchen – Los Angeles, CA

CLOSED October 31, 2023

727 N Broadway

Established 2012

Visited December 20, 2014

Sometimes you look inside a restaurant to see how many customers are dining and make a decision to enter based on busyness. Such was the case with Fortune Gourmet. There was nothing particular that made it stand out among the many restaurants in Chinatown. Having an A grade and clean appearance were tacit factors in making the decision.

Pa Ord Noodle #3 – Los Angeles, CA

CLOSED October 15(?), 2023

5269 Hollywood Blvd

Established 2002

Visited December 20, 2014

We asked four different locals where Thai Town was and they said they never heard of it, even though we were only a block away from it. We finally saw a small inconspicuous sign Thai Town and wandered the streets looking for an eatery. We asked another local if she could recommend a good restaurant and she said yes, the one she works at if you’re looking for westernized Thai food. For more authentic Thai food, go to Pa-Ord a few doors down, which we did.

Skewers by Morimoto - Los Angeles International Airport LAX

CLOSED  July 31(?), 2021

Terminal 5

Opened September 13, 2012

Visited August 2, 2013

I'm excited to dine at Morimoto's with his Iron Chef reputation but upon receiving my order, my first thought is has Morimoto eaten or even seen the food here? Truly he can't be the chef behind this pile of ingredients. How does he face the world having his name on this establishment? He sold out!  Cat Cora's Kitchen at SLC is pathetic but Morimoto's Skewers is bottom of the restaurant barrel dreadful.

Burger King LAXBKG07 - Los Angeles International Airport LAX

CLOSED July (?) 2017

Terminal 3 has limited food options and when you're in a hurry, this Burger King is not your best option as a long queue and limited staff make for a long wait. It made me wonder if I should have gone to the sit down restaurant across the way to order take out.

This Burger King other than being extremely busy and slow seemed typical Burger King, a step below the standards of McDonald's with older decor in need of updating. The workers are perfunctory. The tables aren't greasy but the floors need sweeping.

Subway #28422 - Los Angeles, CA

6151 W Century Blvd

CLOSED late 2015(?)

So I'm looking out the hotel window and want food before I head to LAX.  Few restaurant are in proximity to this ring of overpriced hotels.  I turned in the rental car, and the number of restaurants within reasonable walking distance narrows down to almost nothing.  Subway looked like the only option within walking distance, not withstanding Steven Wright.

Almost everyone in line was either a pilot or flight attendant. It can't be too bad, right? I certainly don't want my pilot to have a case of food poisoning.

Subways tend to be standardized in quality and quantity. The difference is when someone with a bit of artistry builds the sandwich and it translates into a great sandwich. The person who assembled the Black Forest Ham footlong wasn't an artist but did a standard job.

No surprises. A seemingly well maintained shop.

웨스턴순대 Western Soondae - Los Angeles, CA

CLOSED late 2015(?)

543 S Western Ave

Deluxe Soondae includes Soondae Kuk and Soondae Plate. That didn’t mean anything to us until we looked at the menu which said the Soondae plate comprised steam Korean rice blood-wurst-sausage and assorted pork intestine. The Soondae Kuk comprised also of the blood wurst sausage, pork intestine soup, and spicy nira salad. We were too dumb to glean the meaning of soondae and ended with too orders of the same.

The soondae was tasty with a mushy yet agreeable texture provided by the rice filling. The muddy brown color provided by the blood was mentally off putting but less with each passing bite. The meal was interesting and filling if lacking in protein.  3 stars.

Adobo Grill - Los Angeles, CA

4716 Fountain Ave

CLOSED March(?) 2017

Adobo serves cafeteria style. Seeing foods we were unfamiliar with, we asked what each of the offerings were. The owner which I assume is Pop of this Mom and Pop operation offered small samples to help us through the process.

Ruby's Dinette - Los Angeles International Airport LAX

CLOSED

Terminal 6

Ruby's marketing is a reason, not the only reason, why they are a bit player in a market dominated by In-N-Out burgers because they're actually quite similar.
