I was searching for the Madison Sandwich Shoppe with muffaletta on the mind. What I saw was a situation that would have had Gordon Ramsey screaming, "You !@#$%. What the #$%& are you thinking?"
The storefront had two signs. One read Madison Sandwich Shoppe while the window read Jorgie's. I arrived about quarter to noon. On the door was a Post-It note written "back in 10". I peered in. A hole in the wall with two tables. The door opened at 12:10 PM. I asked if this was Madison or Jorgie's. Jorgie's, ownership changed Feb 1. I asked if they served muffaletta. No. I looked the specials on the blackboard and Shrimp Po' Boy was offered at $8.95. I got my sandwich at 12:37 PM.
It seemed as if I had walked into a storm of domestic and professional business gone awry. They needed a sign "Help Wanted: Business Manager". Closed at noon? I watched four walk up customers leave because the door was locked.
Onto the food. I chose the Po Boy to ascertain competence. Given what I witnessed, I wasn't holding out for much but to my surprise, the sandwich turned out to be decent. The shrimp wasn't deep fried as expected but grilled. The shrimp was cooked right and retained a good snap. The green sauce tasting avocado based was mildly to moderately spicy and added a nice zing. Whatever it was, it soothed this savage beast. The bread was just kind of there to hold the filling together. With the right bread, it could be an elite sandwich.
The $8.95 price tag is competitive for the Cities. The sandwich was promising but they need to get their personal and professional business in order.
