Szechwan situated among a cluster of hotels has a
captive audience of business travelers and tourists. However, it
doesn't rest on its laurels because the restaurant also draws a lot of
local Asian customers hungry for authentic Chinese food. It is the real
deal. Two the three dishes pictured below were
excellent. Which one didn't make the grade?
It was the Dan Dan Noodle. It arrived at the table looking like someone plopped plain spaghetti into the bowl. Where was all the yummy toppings? Where was the minced pork, scallion, peanuts, and chili oil? Did I in my excitement overlook the ingredients? Was it buried underneath? Let me mix it up and see. Nope. My disappointment remained. A dish I looked forward to and hadn't had in over a year was a grand disappointment. It lacked chili oil punch. The cold noodles tasted like gritty spaghetti. I hoped this was not a harbinger of the entrees.
The Cumin Beef rates a one pepper according to the menu but it had less heat than either the dan dan noodles or the hot and sour soup. The tenderized beef felt a bit airy and light on seasoning both cumin and salt but was an otherwise very nice dish. The warmth of the beef contrasted by the cool cilantro made for great mouth feel.
This leaves the Stir Fried Fish menu item C73 as the stellar entree. Tongue burning hot out of the kitchen, it had a mild wok hay flavor. Fabulous. The combination of fish, wood ear, and snap peas was so right in texture, seasoning, and flavors. The one thing that would have made this dish better if garoupa fillet were used, otherwise this dish is a repeater.
