Trattoria da Vinci - St Paul, MN

CLOSED July 2015

400 Sibley St # 190

Our organizer made dinner reservations for 50. To make this go smooth, the Pasta Bar was set up in advance for us.  The Pasta Bar is a lunchtime offering ($10.50), not a typical dinner feature.

Dinner starts with a Caesar salad. Our waitress explains how the Pasta Bar works. Start with one of four sauces (Alfredo, Marinara, Spicy Marinara, and ?). The pasta bar has trays filled with over 30 different items. Tell the cook what you want. I chose Alfredo sauce, artichokes, capers, tomatoes, shrimp, seafood, spicy sausage, and bow tie pasta. The cook grabs each, tosses it into a skillet, and cooks it for about 5 minutes as I wait in line.

How is it? Piping hot and delicious. The Alfredo sauce is Goldilocks, not too salty, not too heavy, and the ingredients are fresh and lively, making the dish seemingly light and exquisite. Every colleague I speak with is impressed with the quality.

Pre-cooking, it doesn't appear like much volume but once the cook dumps the skillet contents into a bowl, a huge portion presents itself. When I started at the line, I was overwhelmed with choices and thought I would go for seconds. I could only finish about 2/3rd of the first and only dish.

Dessert is tiramisu, untypically shaped like a Hostess Snowball. The tiramisu is surprisingly average given the excellence of the entree.

If tonight's dinner is representative, I'll take it over Olive Garden without hesitation.
