Peking Garden is both a sit down order off the menu and a buffet restaurant. While the familiar and typical American Chinese staples are listed, they also have a substantial number of authentic Chinese dishes that very few other Twin Cities Chinese restaurants offer.
It had been over a year since we were here. My recollection was that Peking’s buffet was probably the best Chinese buffet in the Twin Cities but with limited offerings.Rice Noodle: Excellent. It had the elusive to the home cook wok hay taste. I must have gone back 5 times for a ladle of this.
Fried Rice: Excellent. It also had that elusive wok hay taste. This is what fried rice is supposed to taste like. It wasn’t world class but I’d be ecstatic to replicate it
Cha Sui (Chinese BBQ pork). Excellent. The way it should taste.
Duck wing and feet: Very good to excellent. I believe this was leftover from a Hot Pot. I’m not complaining. I enjoyed the deep star anise flavor.
Soy sauce chicken: Very good. Too salty by itself but good with plain white rice.
Egg Foo Young: Very good. Solid and firm.
Chow mein: It tasted off, a little too chewy as if not quite cooked.
Pot Sticker: Not good. It was very hot but it had an alcohol aftertaste.
Egg Tart: Sitting under the light, the egg custard overcooked.
Bottom line: While not everything was fantastic, there was plenty “good, not just good for a buffet” items AND authentic Chinese items that this continues to be my favorite tried Chinese buffet in the Twin Cities area.
