Frigate? Firkin? Am I the only one thinks both these names are substitutes for a word that would otherwise be inappropriate for prime time? I'm heading to the Firkin pub. Did you see that Frigate driver cut me off?
Once I got beyond the name, the question became how is the food? It is a pub first and foremost. It is a traditional Britsh pub with traditional English food or is it a gastropub? And beyond that the other burning question is who is the clientele? Brampton/Brown Town has comparatively few restaurants for the nonadventurous narrow white tongue. You could say it is an enclave.
First answer, it offers traditional but somewhat surprisingly eclectic selection of English food.
Shepard's Pie. I wondered why it was taking so long as I had expected the pie to be fully prepared ahead and the cook just doing some additional heating. When it finally arrived, it arrived scalding hot. The filling tasted good but familiar. From the taste, texture, and density, I got the impression this is a commercial rather than homemade filling. The ground beef is too small and uniform. The peas and carrots seemed too uniform for a kitchen preparation. The gravy is similar to grocery store offering. The part that did taste kitchen made is the potato top. Rich, creamy, salted just right, and broiled to perfection. This Shepard Pie is comfort food done right.
The cook also did the green beans right with a nice sprinkle of black pepper to give the beans a bit of kick typically absent.
Food: ★★3/4
Service: ★★1/4
