City Barbeque - Cincinnati, OH

After my introduction to Texas BBQ, I'm forever fixin' to find but missing great BBQ. No matter where I'm at, I'm looking and mostly hoping to find great BBQ. I was hoping local chain City Barbeque with it's interior giving off Cooper's Old Time Barbeque vibes would fill a gap.

The City Sampler includes all that. Pulled pork, sausage, chopped beef brisket, and hidden underneath the white bread is smoked turkey. I chose jambalaya and a side salad to offset the unhealthy proteins.

City Barbeque is no Cooper's Old Time Barbecue. The pulled pork and brisket while moderately tender both tasted as smoked without seasoning, e.g. salt, pepper. A healthy dose of vinegary sauce still didn't do much for the mushy pulled pork. The brisket was pulled too fine to discover it's true nature but it ran lean and dry. The BBQ sauces run sweet even the spicy one that wasn't spicy.

The Smoked Turkey was the winner of the sampler. Moderately smokey with a moist texture yet without visible juices. Seasoned well, it reminded me of Big Bob Gibson's Bar-B-Q smoke turkey. It was almost as good as Big Bob's but not quite. I would have been happy with a plate solely consisting of the turkey.

The sausage was good, tasting quite commercial, and left me wondering if it was homemade or store bought.

The jambalaya was more enjoyable than the pulled pork and brisket. It wasn't traditional but a layer of messy good flavorful slop spooned over rice.
