Anoush Deli is a low profile place limited to locals. Only a couple of cocky office workers dined in but the way these two were going on about the food, I had to believe it was going to be good.
A gyro isn't a definitive acid test of a Middle Eastern/Mediterranean restaurant's mettle but if they execute it poorly or use sub-par ingredients, rest assured you wish you had spent your money elsewhere.
Anoush Deli assembled the best looking, most appetizing gyro I have ever had. That sprinkle of paprika, whatever the red specks, gives the package a gourmet's touch. Pretty but adds no substance. Tastewise, the gyro was standard. The ingredients were a fresher than typical but the nothing give it that extra zing. The flavors were muted, the meat lacking savoriness and the tzatziki less than tart. The meat should have been hotter and the flatbread could have been grilled to the desirable masochistic too hot to hold state. It tasted more authentic rather than Americanized and for my palate, the gyro ranked in about the top 30% of gyros I've had.
