What: The Biwa Burger, reportedly one of the best burgers in Portland, is available only after 10 PM. That fit my schedule perfectly after flying back into town.
Ordered medium rare, it arrived medium rare. The first bite tells the story of the burger and the Biwa Burger, told a marvelous story. Deep, beefy, smoky, juicy, spicy. The 1/ 2 inch thick seasoned ground beef patty told me I was biting into some real meat. With the elation of the first bite subsiding, I slowed to scrutinize the texture and flavor. The sesame bun was refreshing fresh and one of the best I can recall having on a burger. It was on slightly on the small side and nearing disintegration with the last few bites. Toppings included chasyu (barbecued pork belly), lettuce, and kimchi mayo. The chasyu sinned, short of being fall apart ultra tender and unctuous that I expect of pork belly. The chasyu ostensibly substituted for bacon didn't provide a cohesive mouth feel. Cost: $8 including potato salad. Rating: 9.5. It would have rated higher but I have become so accustomed to cheese on a burger that the Biwa felt like it was missing something. That's not an indictment of the Biwa burger but of myself.
I ordered a house made Genmai cream soda, slightly sweet taste reminiscent of pineapple Certs rather than hinting of brown rice.
