Is it chimerical to believe BBQ equivalent to Southern BBQ exists in Yankee territory? I stopped into John Hardy's chasing the fantasy. The packed parking lot mid-afternoon here at a difficult to reach dead end street suggested a reality. My hope was the locals knew a secret.
Pulled Pork Sandwich with Jo Jo Potatoes and Fried Okra. Pulled Pork is their claimed specialty. It's supposed to be 4 ounces of pulled pork but it seemed less. It was a pile of ashen gray pork. The bread was the fluffy airy type I dislike so that didn't improve my perception. Of course appearances can be deceiving so I would reserve final judgement in the eating. How did the pork taste? Like an overdose of smoke. Nothing but smoke and a bit of salt. On the positive, it was moist and tender.
The Jo Jo potatoes were bland and lukewarm. The Okra was the best thing about the meal fried hot, crispy, and with whole cross sectional slices.
John Hardy's served one of the most uncaring passionless restaurant meals I've had in a while.
