What: Authentic Philly Cheesesteaks in Portland. My most frequent Portland lunch stop.
I've had the self proclaimed best Philly cheesesteak Pat's King of Steaks and walked away disappointed after years of anticipation. It's a tourist trap. Tons of beef are chopped and churned and mechanically assembled coupled with brusque window service.
Great cheesesteak outside of Pennsylvania are sparse. You're not supposed to eat Philly cheesesteaks outside Philly but an exception is Grant's Philly Cheesesteak on the far east outskirts of Portland.
A colleague ordered takeout and brought back a bunch cold. Even cold, I could taste the greatness that exceeded Pat's King of Steaks. It was the start of many more.
Feb 4, 2013. As much as I like Grant's Philly cheesesteak and as much as I prefer beef over chicken, their Tillamook Chicken Steak sandwich is better, more tender, more flavorful, and texturally pleasing. But why choose? Order both and Grant's being part of my routine lunch circuit, I do.
March 24, 2016, 12:41 PM. Finally, a new camera and fairly good lighting to better showcase their creation. This one was an eat in.The Original above is half sized and decidedly too small for such a delicious offering. Order the whole instead. The sandwich is made to order and takes a few minutes to prepare. What arrives at the table is a creation made with love that buries Pat's King of Steaks. Tender flavorful chopped steak, hot melted cheese, sweet peppers, and a fresh crunchy roll that works synergistically for a comforting Philly the way a Philly should be.
Bottom Line: The Real Deal. Way big real deal!
