What: The Best Lobster Roll
Portland Lobster Co. has one of the best locations on Commercial Street to make the rabble and their money part. For the foodie tourist in Portland Maine, a lobster roll is a bucket list must try.
It must be annoying being a Maine Portlander living in the shadow of Portland, Oregon when people automatically assume when you say you're from Portland that you're from Oregon. No matter as Portland Maine has its charms and gets double respect as a foodie destination.
Lobster roll. It was a wallet robbing $17. The menu says a 1lb. lobster but after shelling, it's about 5 ounces. More lobster and less fries if you're charging an arm. The lobster was brushed with butter rather than prepared with the classic expected mayo. The lobster lacked sweetness and flavor. A few chunks were stringy and none of it too tender. The roll reminded me of a lightly buttered toasted hot dog bun, which it was. It looks better in picture than in real life. As Shania Twain sang, "It don't impress me much."
If this is representative of Connecticut style lobster rolls, I will pass on future lobster roll. I love lobster but this didn't do anything for me. I won't rule out future Maine style lobster salad rolls.
Great outdoor atmosphere and view.
Bottom Line: Hype.
