Lanie's sits sandwiched between A&W and Tim Horton's. Each had long queues but Lanie's was almost cricket quiet. Maybe that's an omen. Still I lean on spending money at independents plus the Montreal smoked meats called my name.
Smoked Meat combo with a small smoked meat sandwich, side order of pasta salad, and a small drink for $7.50. Lanie's wasn't kidding when they label the sandwich small. The sandwich was about 4-1/2 inches long. I was expecting a pastrami like texture with strong smokey taste but instead the meat was flat, spongy, processed luncheon meat-like without discernible smoke. The pasta salad was al dente times five with heavy handed salt.
Poutine $7. The fries were average at best. The curds didn't squeak and the gravy should be renamed soup. The cashier poured a couple ladles of watery bland liquid over the pile. The liquid was slightly more than lukewarm. If this was my first time eating poutine, I would have declined all further offers of poutine.
A great disappointment. The locals know this and that's why a queue never formed in the 15 minutes I observed Lanie's.
