The name is ripe for jokes. That it is situated next to a pet food outlet store makes it fodder for racist jokes. But as it turns out it is an oasis in a dessert otherwise catering to conservative Midwest palates.

Ho King is like Chinese Buffet A which is copy of Chinese Buffet B is a copy of Chinese Buffet C, etc.

Three items stand out: spicy taco dumplings (I forget exact name), sesame chicken, and lo mein.

I haven’t seen taco dumplings at any Chinese buffets prior. These are a fried triangular shaped skin with a mystery meat filling. It has a nice kick.

The sesame chicken has a nice lightly fried coating with fairly large chunk of tender meat middle and a nice slightly sweet and sticky sauce covering the exterior. Judging by the size of the tray and the speed in which it is refilled, the regulars consider this a staple to shovel onto the plate.

The lo mein is superior and different from typical TC buffets. It’s not the hard fried processed La Choy stuff nor the slightly thicker then spaghetti noodles. This is the thin real deal and comes packaged with lust inducing wok hay. Yes, it is a bit too greasy, and no, it doesn't need the soy coloring.

For Cottage Grove, Ho King is good.
