Sammy's seems to be a hangout for the locals but also attracted visitors like me with their tantalizing sign. I walked in amid little clouds of cigarette smoke and was momentarily stunned because I thought a smoking ban rules by law in restaurants.
Sammy's offers a number of sandwiches and I was tempted to go for the pastrami but as their sign says, they have the "famous corned beef" so that's what I had to have.

I walked to the counter in the back of the bar and put in the order for a whole Corned Beef sandwich ($5.75) The woman kept on asking me questions, not quite impatient but a little irritated that I had to reply with questions on options. I didn't realize options like cheese, vegetables, and a whole host of condiments were available. I asked what was customary for people to order and she said that people ordered what they liked. She grated me with her lack of recommendation...so there was no specific way to order Corned Beef sandwich.

My sandwich selection then ended with the Provolone, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and brown mustard. The corned beef was sliced thin but it should have been about 1/16 in. thicker. The corned beef was too lean but was still tender. Lean is good on a diet but not so when it comes to a corned beef sandwich which should be dripping with primal fat. The lean thin sliced corned beef made for a dainty sandwich rather than one that screamed New York Deli.

It was an OK sandwich and a worthwhile stop. Famous? Maybe in Pittsburgh. World famous? Sammy who?
