Mamma Pina Pizzeria - Pittsburgh, PA

Closed 2012(?)

901 Penn Ave

Mamma spent little money making this place feel welcoming. It's Spartan with its prison fixed bench seats and tables and almost complete lack of wall decoration. Maybe a portrait of Mussolini would help liven the atmosphere.

The menu board lists Regular and Sicilian sliced. I asked what the difference is. The Sicilian has a thicker crust. I settled on a slice of Regular ($1.85).

The cheese pizza looked drab and unappetizing but with the first bite, I realized I had something special. The sauce, cheese, and crust was unlike any pizza I've had before, with perfect taste and texture. It felt like real Italian/Sicilian pizza. With each successive bite, I appreciated the simplicity of the pizza more and reflected on how other pizzas layer on the toppings to be appetizing.

I returned 2 years later. Same dive. Same brusque service.  Same good pizza. I returned after another 2 years and found the doors closed.
