The St Paul Grill - St Paul, MN

350 Market St.

TV Exposure: Delicious Destinations Minneapolis

What: Wild Rice Soup

The pack of hyenas finally found the St Paul Grill inside the St Paul Hotel. The St Paul Hotel portrays a classy upscale establishment oozing money for those who ooze money. We watched as the beautiful women in studied posture and the men in tailored suits stepped out of their cars where uniformed doormen and valets attentively assisted. Our T-shirts was gauche, but we overwhelmed the status by sheer numbers. We failed to get any personal attention from the staff.
The menus were waiting for us, listing the food choices sans price. This was a 5 course meal including starters, salad, entrees, sides, and dessert.

Our table shared starters and sides including:
  • Hot Pepper Shrimp: Cajun dusted shrimp in a sweet, tangy hot sauce.
  • Cajun Bites: sauteed beef tenderloin bites tossed with Cajun seasoning with horseradish sauce
  • Grill Au Gratin Potatoes: tangy cheese sauce with a hint of ale, fresh chives, and potatoes
  • Asparagus Spears
  • Baked Mac and Cheese: elbow macaroni, Tillamook cheddar, and bacon
  • East Coast Fried Potatoes: baby red potatoes with lemon, parsley, garlic, and citrus tarragon aioli. This was my favorite of the bunch with the parsley reminding me somewhat of tabouli.

I choose the Caesar salad with anchovies, which was an average rendition, invoking no sense of anticipation for the entree.

My entree is the 24 ounce Bone-In Ribeye. The steak was one of the better quality thick steaks I've had with a nice grilled flavor but lacking depth. I asked for medium and it arrived much closer to well. Everyone who ordered steak at our table received overcooked steaks.

I didn't stick around for dessert. By this time, I was stuffed and service was slow.

The large bar with liquor bottles lined against a mirrored wall giving the establishment a studied stunning view. Unfortunately, the food doesn't match the decor or the image they attempt to portray.

Bottom Line: Hype
