Ali Baba's - West St Paul, MN

Ali Baba's serves gyros but also a host of other Greek and Lebanese offerings. As much as I wanted to try the falafel, the gyro's siren song was too strong.

I ordered a Special which was a Mega Gyro with a pop ($6.49). The gyro consisted of beef and lamb, served in pocket bread with lettuce, tomato, raw onion, and tahini (or tzatziki?). It was a mountain. The dilemma: Use a fork to pick at the fillings until it became manageable or just grab it full gusto hoping it wouldn't crumble with the first bite?

The gyro meat was robust with large sized chunks of meat, onion, and tomato. If there was a downfall to this gyro, it was the use of a pocket bread  rather than the Pita bread which I should have asked for.

Ali's is a little nondescript hole in a wall establishment, seemingly overshadowed by the nearby louder display of Dino's The Greek Place. We were served by a couple of friendly welcoming gentlemen whom I would assume would be the owners. While the food didn't have a wow factor, it was solid and I would return to support this local independent operation.
