La Sirena Gorda - Minneapolis, MN

CLOSED November 3, 2011. Health issues brought an early retirement.

920 E Lake St, Midtown Global Market

La Sirena Gorda (Fat Mermaid) specializes in tempting seafood. We settled on the Flautas Pescado ($6.25) Fish Flautas platter with mahi-mahi. Flauta is Spanish for flute, which is an apropos name for this dish consisting of 3 corn tortillas rolled into flute-like shapes.

The owner attentive finishing touches made for an appealing presentation.

By the time we got this flautas platter, the ravenous hunger had been sated so we thought we would be nibbling at it. Just it opposite, it was rapidly devoured. Of all the Mexican dishes we tried at Midtown, the flautas were the ultimate in the vibrancy, freshness, and flavor. The mahi-mahi had a chicken breastlike texture and provided a nice offset to the crunchiness of the corn tortilla. The chilled green sauce contrasted nicely with the warm tortilla. There was just the right amount of heat for this delicate dish. The overflow green sauce and lettuce bed made for a tremendous refreshing salad, and the black beans cleansed the palate between bites.

The flautas had what all dishes should aspire to: great eye appeal with a taste to match or exceed. In this case, it was exceeded.
