Manny's offers an assortment of tortas and we settled on the Bistek Torta ($6.25). As the tortas aren't pictured  on the menu and this being my first, I had no idea of its appearance. I was hoping it wouldn't be a sliced white bread sandwich.

The menu says that tortas are prepared with cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion, avocado, jalapeño pepper, refried beans, chipotle pepper mayo, and comes with a bag of chips.

To my relief I saw the assembler cutting a baguette but the thought came to mind that it would be just a sub.

One bite into the torta reinforced my believe that authentic Mexican food is about freshness, vibrancy, and flavor. The mayonnaise had a sweet and spicy kick. The steak was tender, the lettuce crunchy, and the tomatoes cold. The bread had a crackly crust with a soft interior that never got soggy. How was that possible? The torta was a case where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Bottom Line: The Real Deal
