Cluny Grille - Toronto Pearson International Airport YYZ

T3 USA

Visited January 26, 2018

Finally frequent fliers funneled through Terminal 3 Gate A have additional choices. No longer stuck between choosing Nobel Burger or Urban Crave, Cluny Grille along with the two adjoining restaurants opened three days ago. The service seems promising and flows well. The cashiers appear courteous and professional but maybe because the boss hovers outside advising customers as me. The sausage assemblers still unsure of the creations refer to the posted recipes numerous times stopping and restarting through the build. It's a learning curve, but I didn't experience any hiccups.

The manager informs me Cluny is French themed but the only item that seems French is the croissant used in the breakfast sandwiches.

The Stuffer. Upfront this is airport food lightening the wallet by $11.50 CND. I get my choice of pork sausage, chorizo, and a third option which I don't remember. Chorizo is the most exotic so chorizo it is. Fries, bits of thick cut bacon, cheese, and green onions complete the Stuffer. I take bites of the two proteins unadorned. The chorizo is a quality grade, better than I typically have, mildly spicy with a smoother texture. The bacon is grade significantly better than typical mass produced market offerings but it misses intense bacon pop out flavor. The pedestrian bun hints of starchiness.

The Stuffer uses high quality ingredients that combined misses target synergy. The whole isn't greater than the sum of the parts. It's a $8 street dog at best all things considered, and the customer subsidizes the construction, rent, and wages.

1/17/19  5:06 AM Breakfast Poutine.  Months have passed since the eating, and I forget the specific name of this breakfast meal but it's memorable for dreadfulness.  It's one of the most bland, insipid, and mechanically prepared restaurant meals I've had in a long time, possibly the worst meal I've had in the GTA which says a lot.  Cluny Grille has now had time to mature since its opening and if this meal is typical, it has declined.  They lost me as a customer on this one.
