Locals suggested Grubstake as one of the better stops for food near the midpoint between Phoenix and LA. I wasn't told what to order, only the food was fairly decent. The outside decor is a precursor of what to expect inside. Old license plates line the walls and dollar bills are pinned to the ceiling.
Big Fish and Chips. The waitress said they were known for their fish. Big is most appropos. This is Man vs. Food sized portions! These were about as long as a baby's arms and 4 times the diameter. The beer batter was crispy and lightly seasoned but the seasoning hadn't transferred to the fish (pollack). The tartar sauce and vinegar gave it additional zing. Decent meal. Order this if you're famished.
