If the dish I had was representative of Old Country Sausage, this place is a must eat destination for those who like good food. Of all the meals I've had on this tour, this was the most unexpected and pleasant surprise. I had low expectations, especially seeing I was the sole customer and as I have been disappointed in all previous outings at German restaurants including well regarded ones.
I had the Special at the waitress's recommendation.
I'm not a bean fan but this may be the best beans I've ever had and when I finished the generous portion, I was left wanting more. The only other bean dish that I felt so passionate about was not solely a bean dish but Red Beans and Rice had at The Gumbo Shop in New Orleans. Sweet, savory, and with just a hint of tartness. The texture was great, somehow prepared smooth and without the sandy texture.
I was expecting the Red Cabbage to be overly tart - a little cabbage with vinegar - but instead it was perfectly balanced between tart and sweet. Yes it was a perfect dish, perfectly cooked. I wouldn't change a thing about it.
The Fleischkase. Google it and the first few definition of fleischkase is a meatloaf. I don't know if that's the case here but it was pork based, with more than just a hint of unexpected spiciness enough to tingle the tongue, with savory goodness, and a texture midway between processed meat and a rough hamburger. Fresh, hot, and spectacular.
Was this German food tweaked for the Western palate? No matter. This Special was a Trifecta. Show Old Country Sausage love because they certainly show it in their food.
