Lemon Grass Cafe – Pittsburgh, PA

CLOSED 2012(?)

124 6th St, Pittsburgh, PA

It was 3/4 full of mostly young local professionals when I arrived shortly before noon. Nobody was around to seat me. At about 3 minutes, a family members came out. It was about 5 minutes before the lone waitress dropped by and apologized for the wait.

The Panang lunch entree which came with a soup and a small egg roll.

The lemon grass soup consisting of galanga, lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, tamarind, tomatoes and big chunks of mushroom was sweet, hot, and sour. I would hazard it is not agreeable to most American palates.

The egg roll was tiny and a disappointment. I expected something similar to a Vietnamese cha gio.

The Chicken Panang ($7.50) mildly spicy, comprised Thai basil, peas, green and red pepper in a Panang sauce – dried red chili, lemon grass, shallot, garlic, galanga, kaffir lime leaves, and coconut milk. It was the best part of the meal with the smooth coconut sauce. The heat was perfect for me.

After finishing, I stood at the counter for 7 minutes, the only person in line, before someone finally took my credit card. They must not care about getting paid because I could have walked out without a mad owner chasing me down. Advice to Lemon Grass: Hire more waiters/waitresses and have the host host!

The entree was worthwhile but overall this place is disappointing.
