Old Country Buffet - Woodbury, MN

CLOSED 02/04/2016 as part of a nationwide shuttering.

7433 Currell Blvd

No "research" on US buffets would be complete without a visit to the ubiquitous Old Country Buffet. Old Country serves as a baseline comparison for all other buffets.

We frequented Country Buffet but in recent times we stayed away because the quality slipped and the selection felt limited. The value no longer seemed present but a year's absence we decided to give it another try, returning on Steak Night Thursday.

The steak (sirloin?) wasn't bad. It was a typical Perkins grade steak, never mistaken for Peter Luger. The beef rib was decent with flavored semi-infused. The ham was tender but salty. The rotisserie chicken was on the bland side. The grilled pork was fairly decent but overpowering on the grill taste.

The second plate of food was better than the first. The fried chicken had a crunchy exterior with a juicy middle. The taco salad is one of my favorites here with a fresh crunchy taco bowl and fresh fixings. I still haven't figured out how to eat a taco bowl properly. The country fried steak topped the dinner as the best and most flavorful entree - crunchy exterior with a moist tender middle and plenty of black pepper for a nice bite.

Country Buffet offers a good selection of middle of the road food. The food won't win any James Beard awards but it's a good value. You get more than you pay for volume wise.
