Dong Yang, a grocery store located on a parking lot shared with a nearby strip mall, caters to the Korean customers. Back into the store resides a dining area with tables and seating for about 30. There are no printed menus. Offerings are written on colored paper plastered on the wall, in Korean with minimal English translation. Behind the counter were several women busily preparing food.

We chose No. 2 Short Rib with Vegetable Soup ($9.99) and No. 13 Hot Stone Bowl Rice ($9.99). Sitting on the counter were Sushi Rolls ($3.99) which we also picked up.

The Hot Stone Bowl came out sizzling and continued so for a minute. The picture above does not do the dish justice. On top was a fried egg sunny side up. Immediately beneath were bits of meat, spinach, cucumber, carrots, and little worm like vegetables all sitting on bed of rice that continued to cook and sizzle on hot stone. By the time I worked down to the bottom, the layer of rice against the bowl had turned a beautiful crunchy golden brown.

The Short Rib vegetable soup had a thick just right spicy broth. The soup was heavy with vegetable, preserved mustard (fresh?), but stingy on the ribs. The rib meat was flavorful and fork tender and I kept spooning through the soup in hopes of finding more nuggets of goodness. This spiciness of soup would be an especially welcome on subzero degree days. The flavors of this soup were more mainstream and would be enjoyed by most folks.

The sushi with a side of pickled radish was average but I wasn’t disappointed for the money paid.

When we ate, only a few customers were present. By the time we finished, customers lined up to the hilt awaiting their turn for the home style cooked offerings. That speaks volume of the food here.
