TV Exposure: Unique Eats, Top 5 Restaurants

What: Doughnuts.  Twice Fried Chicken.  Ranked by Food and Wine as the best doughnuts in the state of Pittsburgh.

I was sure the GPS was screwed up because it lead me into the heart of a quiet residential neighborhood. Federal Donuts' understated moderate exterior belies a small dive with counter space for five. Every seat was occupied so I ordered to go.

Half Chicken Order with Za'atar seasoning. The chicken had little juice but was flavorful. The skin was paper thin and crispy. It was mildly spicy with an earthy middle eastern flavors and different enough from the typical fried chicken. It didn't inspire spreading the gospel. I've had better but if Federal Donuts was in my neighborhood, I would stop in for a monthly fix.

The cake doughnut which comes gratis was moist, sodden with some liquid and had a hint of mild citrusy maple flavor. I usually don't like cake donuts but this was an exception.

A couple three Japanese pickles were also included. Different and delicious.

Probability of making an out of the way return: 0%
Probability of returning if in the area: 25%

Bottom Line:  Hype. The chicken was very good but not Top 20 in the US good. Ditto the doughnuts.
