田中壽司 Tanaka Sushi – Richmond Hill, ON

CLOSED 2016(?)

883 16th Avenue Unit 883

In a seeming race to eat at all the AYCE sushi joints, Tanaka comes in at Number 4. Tanaka is classic mom and pop and children run restaurant. You can expect higher quality execution at mom and pop or at least care in execution but the negative is that they watch the money closely.  fAnd that was the case. We felt we were scrutinized by them as we put in each additional order of food. They set a 1.5 hour time limit to dine. AYCE really kills them. They don't want John Pinette dining here.

BBQ Eel Sushi and Crab Meat Sushi. The eel was especially good so we ordered more.

Grilled Salmon Belly. Fatty and fried crispy, This was the first time I've had this and it was an unexpected treat with a nonfishy taste and ultrasoft ultratender moist texture. I don't like cooked salmon but this makes me look forward to salmon. This was my favorite item of all.

Curry Salmon Roll in the back. In the foreground, Crab Meat and Cucumber Roll. Both were
very good preparations balancing the fillings with the rice.

One thing they could improve on is by providing a checklist order slip like the competition where the customer checks off items they want. The waiter was impatient as we decided what to order.

Tanaka is the best AYCE we’ve been to so far although my partner disagrees. Maybe we just chose right today or maybe the food was just better than the competition we’ve tried up to this point.
