神燈 Magic Wok Restaurant – Markham, ON

CLOSED Dec(?) 2017

4331 14th Ave, Markham, ON

Magic Wok was packed to the rafters and there were no parking spots. It was packed but it turned out the two way jam was caused by one lone car parked 5 minutes too long in the driveway for passenger pickup of elderly. I get working with elderly. I get that the parking lot is dangerously icy. But have some consideration for others because the world isn't just about you.

Magic Wok’s reputation is that it’s a must eat but that it had lost its luster. The packed house was giving me hope that it was still a stellar place.

We finally settled on the prefixe Dinner for 6 at a hefty $75 plus $1.80 per bowl of rice.

The Soup arrived first. The blandness I trust does not portend of things to come.

The Shrimp with Pepper and Eggplant came next. How could Magic Wok claim it as spicy because it only provided the mildest tingle? The shrimp is cooked to the proper level but they should have been split down the back more to infuse the flavor. It is an OK dish with only the slightest wok hay flavor.

We didn’t think about it but we really should have ordered the Chicken Mango Bird Nest. When this dish arrived and is juxtaposed against the Shrimp Eggplant dish, I felt as if Magic Wok isn’t magical about creating magical set dinners. It appears to be shrimp overdose. The Seafood Bird Nest presentation lack asthetic appeal, and the flavor is almost in the insipid category.

If the first two entrees were disappointments, then the Chicken dish is medication that made the pain go away. This is an absolutely stellar preparation. The simple dishes showcase the chef’s ability and this one did it in spades. The chicken is ultra velvety and smoother than any I’ve ever had before. The green onion and oil was a touch salty but it compensated for the bland Bird Nest.

The remaining prefixe items fell short of expectations.

Maybe Magic Wok used to be magic but it isn't this evening. Each prepared dish is average and missed the X factor that takes them to the special level. The service isn’t terrible but the waiters spent little time servicing customers.

We won’t be returning.
